History of Taiwan and the Caribbean Islands
Taiwan's diplomatic history in the Caribbean began in the mid-20th century, driven by a strategic effort to bolster its international presence and counterbalance the influence of the People's Republic of China. Starting with Haiti in 1956, Taiwan established and maintained diplomatic relations with several Caribbean nations, including Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Belize.
These partnerships are characterized by mutual support in international forums and substantial development aid from Taiwan, encompassing infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Through these enduring relationships, Taiwan has significantly contributed to the growth and resilience of its Caribbean allies while enhancing its own international legitimacy.
